The Brookhaven High School Percussion Ensemble, known as the Smooth Panther Experience, is a performing group made of percussionists from both the AJH and BHS band programs. This ensemble is not a class — students will not receive grades or academic credit for participation. Instead, it is a voluntary extracurricular activity designed for students who want to grow musically beyond the regular band setting.

The ensemble exists to strengthen and showcase musicianship for both music programs by giving students additional opportunities to perform, collaborate, and develop their skills. Through this group, students will experience new styles of music and performance formats that go beyond marching band and concert band, helping them become more versatile, confident, and expressive musicians.

Participation is optional and intended for students who are motivated to explore percussion at a deeper level while contributing to a positive and growing band culture.

More than a performing ensemble, they are ambassadors of music, launching a tour that carries their sound beyond their own campus to two or three schools each year, where they will ignite curiosity, mentor young players, and showcase what a thriving band program can be. Every performance becomes both a concert and a conversation, proving that when rhythm is shared, it doesn’t just entertain—it inspires, connects, and grows the future of music.

The Smooth Panther Experience is under the direction of Keshawn Williams, Assistant Band Director. The group rehearses on Thursdays after school, and will give several performances this Spring. Check our calendar for updates so that you can see the incredible work these students are doing!
